Hot water tanks generally fail when corrosion attacks the exposed steel in the tanks. No tanks are lined with glass perfectly. There are imperfections in the lining of the tank and when these imperfections begin to corrode and weaken, your tank will fail. This will usually happen at the most inappropriate time, such as a holiday or when you are away on vacation. A tank’s life expectancy is estimated to be ten to twelve years, but as of July 2003, all conventional gas tanks must include a flammable vapor resistant safety feature, which has added to its cost. Also, tanks are better insulated as of January 2004.
